What is FPS?

What is FPS?

FPS stands for "Frames Per Second" and refers to the number of image frames per second displayed in a video game or digital video stream. This value determines the visual fluidity and smoothness of a media content. A high FPS value creates a more fluid and realistic sense of motion, while low FPS values can create stuttering and choppiness in the image, which is especially noticeable in fast-moving scenes.

FPS is an important performance metric for video games and other moving media experiences. For example, in the gaming world, gamers often prefer to play games at 60 FPS or higher because it makes the game more responsive and enjoyable. Movies and television broadcasts are usually shot at much lower FPS, with a standard movie being shown at 24 FPS. This suits the aesthetic and narrative flow that filmmakers prefer, but can sometimes be insufficient for fast-paced action sequences.

How Much Should FPS Be?

FPS (Frame Per Second), the number of frames displayed per second, varies depending on the type of media being used and the intended user experience. The ideal FPS value for video games is generally considered to be 60 FPS because it optimizes visual fluidity and in-game response time. However, higher FPS values (e.g. 120 FPS or 144 FPS) offer an even smoother experience, especially for games that are competitive and require fast response. Such values can significantly improve visual quality and gaming performance, especially when used with monitors with high refresh rates.

When it comes to watching movies and videos, 24 to 30 FPS is generally considered sufficient. These values provide a cinematic look and adequately support the fluidity of motion that the human eye can perceive. However, for special cases, such as high-speed sports broadcasts or action camera footage, 60 FPS or higher may be preferable. This ensures that motion appears clearer and details are easier to discern, which is especially advantageous when fast-moving objects need to be tracked.

How to Measure FPS?

FPS measurement is a technique used to evaluate visual performance in video games or video streaming. This measurement is done by counting the total number of frames displayed on the screen in a given period of time. Various software tools can perform this measurement, especially in games and video editing programs. For example, popular software such as "FRAPS" or "MSI Afterburner" shows in real time how many frames per second are being displayed when playing games or playing videos. These tools provide the user with FPS values in real-time, making it easy to understand system performance and make hardware or setting optimizations if necessary.

How to Increase FPS?

There are various methods available to increase FPS, and they usually involve hardware upgrades and software optimizations. On the hardware side, upgrading components such as graphics cards, processors and RAM is usually one of the most effective solutions. In terms of software optimization, lowering graphics settings (e.g. resolution, shadow quality, texture details) can significantly increase FPS. Apart from in-game settings, closing unnecessary programs running in the background and keeping the operating system and drivers up to date can also improve system performance and therefore FPS. Regular updates of games and applications for optimization also contribute to FPS increases.
